Chinese Version of Russian  Armored 'Bumerang' Reaches  Testing Phase

Source : http://sputniknews.com

China is finalizing the development of the VP-10, an analogue of the sophisticated Russian-made armored personnel carrier Bumerang (Boomerang), the Russian newspaper Rossiyskaya Gazeta reported.

China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO) has already presented the prototype of the VP-10 at one of the country's military exhibitions. Its design is similar to the Bumerang armored vehicle.

For example, the NORINCO VP-10's engine is installed at the front of the hull, and the troops can leave the vehicle via rear doors, or roof hatches.

The Bumerang armored personnel carrier drives during the Victory Parade marking the 70th anniversary of the defeat of the Nazis in World War II, in Red Square in Moscow, Russia, Saturday, May 9, 2015

The new Chinese armored vehicle is expected to be equipped with different types of combat modules. A lighter version of the machine will be capable of carrying between ten and twelve fully kitted soldiers. A version of the vehicle with heavy weapons on board can only carry eight soldiers.

Like the Bumerang, the amphibious NORINCO VP-10 will have an 8x8 configuration and can be transported by aircraft.

In addition to being put on service in the Chinese army, the new armored vehicle is due to be supplied to African and Latin American countries.

According to the military-informant.com website, the NORINCO VP-10 is currently undergoing a series of tests before being delivered to an unnamed customer.

US Patriot system is pitiful semblance of Russia's S-300

Source : http://english.pravda.ru

Pravda.Ru conducted an interview with Colonel Sergei Khatylev, former chief of Russian anti-aircraft missile forces, to learn an expert opinion about state-of-the-art anti-aircraft missile systems of the Russian Army.

"Anti-aircraft missile system S-400 "Triumf" is second to none in the world and is recognized as the most advanced system of the kind. The idea to create a long-range system appeared during the 1990s to destroy targets at a maximum range at medium altitudes.

"The missiles that were previously developed for the S-300 system can also be used in the S-400 complex. The range of detection systems depends not only on technical parameters but also on geography. Therefore, the S-400 has several options for long-range guidance.

"The heart of the S-400 system is the head of mixed active and semi-active guidance that had been developed since the 1980s. The head has a function to search for enemy aircraft in a given area. That is, the missile arrives to the designated area and starts looking for the target.

"Also, following external commands, a missile can receive information about the enemy and take aim directly in the area designated for destruction. This perfect system was created by the team of engineers led by Almaz-Antei chief designer, Professor Lemansky.

He was personally in charge of all the works. People would not sleep at night as they were making the weapon that would be capable of destroying not only aeroballistic, but also ballistic targets, to protect the sky above Russia. Unfortunately, during the final tests in 2007, Lemansky tragically died right on the range ground. A street in the town of Elektrostal, the Moscow region, was named in his honor."

"What targets can "Triumf" detect and destroy?"

"Anti-aircraft missile system S-400 can detect and destroy tactical and strategic aircraft, as well as aircraft of early radar warning, helicopters, cruise missiles, hypersonic cruise missiles, their warheads, guided air bombs, vulnerable elements of land, surface targets, medium range ballistic missiles, tactical and aeroballistic missiles, as well as unmanned aerial vehicles. There is a very wide range of targets.

"The S-400 complex consists of several vehicles. The anti-missile system includes a command post, a radar complex and automated equipment, a multi-functional radar and a launching system that ensures all pre-launch operations.

"The MRLS radar can detect 300 line targets simultaneously. The electronic equipment of the system offers a few options to the commander, who makes a final decision. Electronic equipment analyzes air traffic situation on their own and takes aim, while a person controls the situation and makes decisions with the help of the equipment.

"The S-400 system can use four types of missiles and four options for obtaining targeting, receiving information from both internal and external sources.

"To date, there are no analogues to Russia's S-400 in the world. This is recognized by all professionals in the world. The US-made Patriot PAC-5 is a pitiful semblance of Russia's S-300 PM-2. The American system can not even be compared with the S-400 as it is too far behind it on all parameters.

"Interestingly, Russian military commanders offered to demonstrate the abilities of the S-300 and the Patriot systems during an arms show in Abu Dhabi. We were ready for the event, but the Americans refused."

"Why did they refuse?"

"They knew that the performance of their system would not let them catch up with the performance of the S-300. There are many disadvantages of the US Patriot that make the American system a lot less effective. It is also important that the Americans expect an air enemy only in a certain sector, while Russia practices all-round defense.

"The Americans are not ready to work, if the target suddenly appears from another direction. They have no rotating antenna post - they launch missiles in an inclined plane. Russia's state-of-the-art systems can protect air space of the country effectively. And of course, our air defense continues to improve."

Fighter deal likely during Modi’s November visit to Russia

Source : http://m.thehindu.com/

The final agreement for the joint development and production of a fifth generation fighter aircraft could be signed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Russia in November, diplomatic sources told The Hindu on Thursday.

Preparations are under way in both countries for the summit-level meeting to impart a qualitative boost to defence cooperation.

Agreeing that differences exist, sources said without getting into the details that “a workaround has been found and discussions are in an advanced stage” and an agreement could be reached “by autumn”. The final deal is likely to be signed in November.

The agreement on the fighter aircraft has been stuck because of differences in the work share between Sukhoi and Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL). As the project is to have equal investment from each side, India has been insisting on parity in the work share. So far, both sides have invested $295 million for the preliminary design. India had some reservations on the engine and stealth characteristics.

India has requested Russia to let its pilots fly the T-50 prototypes currently under testing. A decision by Russia on this is expected shortly. India plans to induct 144 fighters and the entire project is expected to cost over $30 billion. The first batch of aircraft is expected to be handed over to the Russian Air Force in early 2017.

US Army Chief of Staff Gen Odierno Insists on More Troops,  Arms to Europe to ‘Cope With Russia’

Source : http://sputniknews.com

US Army Chief of Staff General Ray Odierno is relying on Russophobic scaremongering to urge America to put an “additional brigade’s worth of heavy equipment, including tanks and armored-personnel carriers, in Germany”; the move will therefore mitigate the cuts to US forces in Europe.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Gen. Ray Odierno, Chief of Staff of the US Army, has called for putting the “larger stockpile of heavy equipment in Germany” in position, including tanks and armored personnel carriers.

“That would allow a heavy brigade of some 3,500 [US] soldiers to fly quickly to Europe,” he added.

Gen. Odierno also voiced his intention “to designate the entire Colorado-based 4th Infantry Division as a so-called regionally aligned force for Europe. Such a designation would mean the division’s brigades, helicopters and logistics specialists would regularly deploy to Europe to conduct security exercises.”

He specified that the military units “would more likely be used for a crisis”.  By “the crisis” the general apparently meant “a rising threat from Russia in Ukraine”.

The "rising Russian threat” card is being played yet again, as the US Army is dealing “with cuts required by the failure to reach a long-term agreement in Congress to end mandatory spending reductions.”

“Gen. Odierno has fought to halt cuts to the Army, but Democrats and Republicans have failed to agree on any measure that would increase long-term spending on the military,” according to The Wall Street Journal.

Gen. Odierno said that if the Army is forced to cut further, reducing its forces below 450,000 soldiers, it would have to curb overseas deployments.

“I am very concerned about the size of the force — we cannot go any lower than 450,000,” Gen. Odierno said. “If we do, we will have to stop doing something. We are not going to meet our requirements in the Middle East, plus our requirements in Europe, plus our requirements in Korea and around the Pacific. Something is going to have to give.”

Gen. Odierno said adding tanks, Bradley Fighting Vehicles and other equipment would allow the US to send forces quickly to assist NATO member countries, should a conflict with Russia erupt.

In the event of a military crisis between Moscow and a NATO member, Gen. Odierno said, the US focus wouldn’t be on pulling out the small companies of soldiers it has in Poland and the Baltic states. Instead, it would use troops from the U.S. and its pre-positioned equipment in Europe to reinforce forces nearest the crisis.

“We hope that the Russians wouldn’t [create a crisis], but we always must be prepared,” Gen. Odierno said. “We have to figure out how to reinforce those companies that are forward.”

According to the Wall Street Journal, the US Army currently has one brigade based in the US state of Georgia that is aligned to Europe. The new plan, which would be implemented over the next two years, would allow more soldiers to be available for operations and exercises in Europe. It would also allow the division’s intelligence experts to focus on the threat from Russia and its planners to become experts on allied capabilities.

Next gen S-350 mobile mid-range missiles to make Russian air defense impenetrable

Source : http://rt.com

Russian air defense is getting ready to deploy S-350 Vityaz mobile SAMs to replace outgoing versions of S-300 anti-aircraft systems. The core of the new system features missiles with state-of-the-art active radar-homing warheads.

Everything is ready for the production of Russia’s brand-new medium to short range mobile S-350 Vityaz anti-aircraft missile complex. The system will replace S-300ps SAMs, which are armed with outdated V55R missiles due for decommissioning by the end of the year.

“The next generation S-350 systems will be operational in the nearest possible future,” General-Major Sergey Babakov, the Commander of Russia’s anti-aircraft missile troops, told journalists in early July. “Deployment is expected to comply with the schedule, no failures on delivery are expected,” the general added.

The S-350 Vityaz system consists of a launcher vehicle, all-aspect radar for scanning airspace and a command vehicle. The maximum number of launchers operating with one radar and command center is classified, as well as the maximum quantity of simultaneously tracked targets.

The S-350 Vityaz is armed with two types of missiles. One is medium range also employed by anti-aircraft S-400 Triumph systems. The other interceptor missile is a brand-new modern projectile with an active homing head, which means it has its own radar station.

The technical characteristics of this new missile“outperform missiles of previous generation systems,” Colonel Igor Klimov, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman, told journalists.

The new missile is smaller, lighter and more maneuverable, General Babakov said last weekend in an interview with Igor Korotchenko, editor-in-chief of the National Defense magazine. “Though it is smaller, its characteristics are better than that of S-300ps. It is agile, does better at ultra-low and maximum heights and has longer range,” the general said.

“I believe the new system is going to be die-hard,”Babakov said in an interview with the Russian News Service radio station.

The S-350 Vityaz was unveiled to the public at the MAKS-2013 International Aviation and Space Show.

Initially, the complex was expected to enter production in 2014, but the final tests of the new missile took more time than was expected.

The S-400 Triumph and S-350 Vityaz complexes are replacing those of the outdated S-300 family systems.

The principal difference between S-350 Vityaz and S-300 is the number of missiles ready for use: the S-350 launcher vehicle carries 12 missiles, whereas the S-300 has just four. This is due to modern missiles being more powerful, and so missiles become either smaller or achieve longer ranges with the same size.

Bulgaria To Award MiG-29 Service Deal To Poland

Source : http://www.defensenews.com

WARSAW — Bulgarian Defense Minister Nikolay Nenchev unveiled plans by his government to sign the much-awaited contract for maintenance and repair services of the country's 12 Mikoyan MiG-29 fighter jets with Poland.

The minister first made the announcement in an interview with Reuters, confirming earlier reports on the government's reluctance to continue its defense cooperation with Moscow. Until now, the aircraft was serviced by Russia. The Bulgarian government decided to award the deal to one of its NATO allies, Poland, because of Sofia's increasing row with Moscow.

A representative of RKS-MiG, the aircraft's manufacturer,, said Poland cannot legally perform maintenance and servicing works on the Russian-built fighter.

"Poland does not have the licence to repair and extend the life of the engines of MiG-29 fighter jets," RKS-MiG's Alexander Alexandrov told local daily Pressa.

This April, Nenchev told local media he was offered a bribe to sign a deal with Russia, but refused to do so. The extended deal until 2019 — which Nenchev said was "unfavorable" to Bulgaria — was priced by the Russian side at some 80 million leva (US $45 million), according to the minister.

The Bulgarian Ministry of Defense is also considering to acquire new fighter jets. When the country joined NATO in March 2004, its government vowed to replace six of its MiG-21 fighters and acquire eight new aircraft by 2016.

Liaoning aircraft carrier's first battle group to be formed next year

Source : http://www.wantchinatimes.com

China's first aircraft carrier battle group is expected to be formed next year to make up for the shortcoming of the limited combat radius of the country's existing fleets, according to China's official news agency Xinhua.

Citing the Military-Industrial Courier, a Russia-based weekly, the report said China's first carrier, the Liaoning, embarked on its first blue-water passage in early 2014 escorted by 12 vessels of different classes. The carrier, refitted in Dalian from a Soviet-era hulk purchased from Ukraine in 1998, was commissioned in 2012.

Beijing is considering different approaches for forming its aircraft carrier battle groups, including the one used by the United States Navy, the report said. Two new aircraft carriers built domestically with greater displacement and greater power are also planned, with the long-term goal of having four new carriers, it added.

With a driving power of 200,000 horsepower, the Liaoning has displacement of 67,500 tonnes at maximum load.

China began to build its first new aircraft carrier in 2013, which is expected to have "initial combat ability" in 2020. The PLA Navy also saw the number of its surface vessels more than double. It now has 50 missile frigates and destroyers in service compared with 15 in 2000.

The country has also spared no efforts in overhauling its old vessels by equipping them with its most advanced weapons, the report said. The PLA's latest model of frigate is equipped with Russian-made P-270 supersonic anti-ship missiles with a range of 209 kilometers and the domestically produced YJ62 anti-ship missiles (241 km), YJ83 missiles (152 km)and YJ8A missiles (104 km), while the Luyang-class or Type 052D destroyers, the most advanced surface vessels in China's navy, will be equipped with vertical launch systems and long-range anti-ship missiles.

China is also developing 10,000-tonne cruisers that are expected to be armed with massive anti-air, anti-ship, ship-based cruise missiles, and even magnetic weapons in the future, according to the report.

That aircraft could be developed jointly by Russia and India, multi-purpose transport aircraft (MTS, Multirole Transport Aircraft - MTA).

"Russia, these aircraft will be in dire need since the early 20s. Whatever we do, no matter how sought to extend the life cycle of the aircraft AN-12 and AN-72, their operation beyond 45-50 years impractical ", - said director of foreign economic activity of JSC" IL "Vladimir A. Belyakov.

Thus, Russia will independently implement draft MTS even if India for some reason come out of it. "Our air force have fulfilled the terms of reference, it is officially approved and introduced into the aircraft all the necessary documents. And what is important - the money allocated ", - said V. Belyakov.

India has identified the first order of 45 vehicles, Russia - 100.

"In India, currently 104 AN-32 aircraft. Even 10-12 years and will change the park. Light military transport aircraft CASA 295 that India plans to produce, does not replace the An-32, it does not have the altitude, and the size of the fuselage does not allow for the transportation of military equipment. For SWAT India has ordered C-130J. Now there are 12. But this is, in fact, flying ground attack with guns and machine guns, "- said V. Belyakov.

Competitors MTS project in the Indian market could be, in particular, the Brazilian aircraft KC-390, upgraded American C-130 Hercules.

Russian-Indian intergovernmental agreement on joint development and construction of aircraft MTA was signed in 2007. For the first time the two countries have reached an agreement on the joint financing of an equal share of the new project in the aircraft industry. Production of the aircraft to be deployed both in Russia and in India.

According to the regulations, MTA is classified as medium military transport aircraft, which provides a wide range of different transport cargo weighing 20 tons at a distance of more than 2 thousand kilometers of unpaved and artificial runway. It provides for the operation of aircraft with high-airfields in any geographical and climatic conditions, day and night, and adverse weather conditions.

As the MTA military transport designed for the transportation and airdropping troops, cargo and technology platforms becparashyutnogo relief goods from low altitudes.

In accordance with the decisions of the shareholders with the Russian side to establish a joint venture is "UAC - Transport Aircraft" (part of the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC)) and "Rosoboronexport".

As reported in June, the head of the United Aircraft Corporation Yuri Slyusarev, Russia calls on India to accelerate work on a plane, so that the first flight took place until 2020.

Russian Navy's New Sonar Can 'Hear' Every Sub Anywhere

Source : http://sputniknews.com

Powerful sonar capable of “hearing” fourth generation nuclear submarines lurking in the deep will undergo trials at Russia’s Northern Fleet before the end of this year.

Another Eight Ships, Two Subs to Reinforce Russian Navy in 2015

The transmitter/receiver unit of the Batareya (Battery) sonar will be lowered to around 300 meters into the water 30 kilometers from the White Sea coast to pick up submarine sounds and send the date up via a fiber optic cable, said Sergei Tsygankov, one of the new sonar’s designers.

“We went for exactly this method of data transmission because not a single Western country now knows how to pick up information traveling through an underwater fiber optic cable,” Sergei added.

Another thing that makes the new sonar so special is that it can single out submarine noise from that of marine creatures, waves, stones, etc..

“Modern submarines are often more silent than the natural soundscape. Still, the Americans prefer to “listen in” during a dead calm, while the Batareya sonar will do the job under any condition,” Sergei Tsygankov emphasized.

Rather than pick up the sounds made by “enemy” subs, the  Batareya was designed to test the sound signature of Russia’s own submarines.

“This new sonar will give our submarine builders a chance to single out the noisier elements of their craft to make a submarine as quite as possible,” Sergei Tsygankov said.

Russia have developed secret 'superweapon' capable of switching off foreign satellites and enemy weapons

Source : http://www.dailymail.co.uk

Russia has claimed to have built a revolutionary new weapon system that can render enemy satellites and weapons useless.

Its Russian makers say it is a 'fundamentally new electronic warfare system' which can be mounted on ground-based as well as air- and sea-borne carriers.

However, it has refused to reveal how the system works.

It is described as 'a fundamentally new electronic warfare system capable of suppressing cruise missile and other high-precision weaponry guidance systems and satellite radio-electronic equipment.'

'The system will target the enemy's deck-based, tactical, long-range and strategic aircraft, electronic means and suppress foreign military satellites' radio-electronic equipment,,' Russia's Radio-Electronic Technologies Group (KRET) Deputy CEO Yuri Mayevsky told Russian news agency TASS.

To comply with international weapons laws, the system will be mounted on ground-based, air-and seaborne carriers and not on satellites.

'It will fully suppress communications, navigation and target location and the use of high-precision weapons,' said adviser to the KRET first deputy CEO Vladimir Mikheyev.

'The system will be used against cruise missiles and will suppress satellite-based radio location systems.

China: We Need Long-Range Strategic Bombers

Source : http://sputniknews.com

Chinese defense officials said Beijing needs to develop a long-range strategic bomber capable of striking enemies farther away from its coast in the event of a conflict.

The Chinese government has ramped up defense spending in recent years, particularly on its navy, which has commissioned its first aircraft carrier and is adding to its submarine and surface fleets.

But according to the latest issue of Kanwa Defence Review, a Canada-based defense and weapons technology publication, a meeting of Chinese military officials recently deemed the country’s air force to be a "strategic force" – a title previously reserved for the Second Artillery Corps, the country's de facto strategic missile force.

Officers at the meeting reportedly urged the Chinese air force to prioritize the development of a long-range strategic bomber – an aircraft that can carry more than 10 metric tons of air-to-ground weaponry and fly at least 5,000 miles without refueling.

The meeting agreed that a long-range strategic bomber would enable the air force to attack farther out into the Pacific Ocean, as far as the "second island chain," Agence France-Presse reported.

Chinese military strategists identify two island chains as forming a geographic basis for China's maritime defensive perimeter.

While the precise boundaries of these chains have never been officially defined, the "first island chain" refers to the arc stretching from Japan to Taiwan, which includes numerous US military bases on the Japanese island of Okinawa.

The second chain refers to islands farther east in the Pacific, including the Marianas, the Carolines, and the US territory of Guam, home to Andersen Air Force Base. A third "island chain" encompassing Hawaii is also sometimes mentioned, AFP reported.

The ability to strike the second island chain would deter foreign militaries from intervening in an emergency or conflict, Chinese military officials decided at the meeting.

Chinese defense technology magazine Aerospace Knowledge said in a series of articles last month that China needs a long-range stealth bomber.

"A medium-range bomber can't essentially fix the PLA air force's shortcomings in terms of strategic strike and strategic deterrence," the magazine reported. "Thus the air force does need an intercontinental strategic bomber capable of penetrating an enemy's air defenses."

But the publication's deputy editor-in-chief, Wang Yanan, said such an aircraft would require "a state-of-the-art structure and aerodynamic configuration as well as a high-performance turbofan engine."

"All of these are major problems facing the Chinese aviation industry," he added. "I don't think these difficulties can be resolved within a short period of time."

Russia Arms Expo-2015 to demonstrate Armata combat platform

Source : http://tass.ru/en

YEKATERINBURG, July 7. /TASS/. The new-generation combat platform Armata will go on display at the international defense exhibition Russia Arms Expo-2015, which will be held in Nizhny Tagil in the Urals in early September, Uralvagonzavod CEO Oleg Siyenko said on Tuesday.

The Armata combat platform may be demonstrated in a closed show or "behind the glass," Siyenko said.

"As for the demonstration of the Armata, we’ll certainly show it. This will be either a closed show or Armata will be placed behind a glass anti-glare contour," he said.

Armata is a heavy unified platform created for tanks and infantry fighting vehicles.

The new-generation tank boasts an unmanned turret, fully digitalized control and an isolated armored capsule accommodating the crew.

Armata’s main weapon is a 125 mm gun. In principle, the vehicle can be armed with a 152 mm gun, too. Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin earlier said Armata’s shell is capable of piercing one-meter-thick armor.

The 10th International Exhibition of Arms, Military Hardware and Ammunition (RAE-2015) will be held in Nizhny Tagil on September 9-12. It is expected to become the largest exhibition from the viewpoint of demonstrating the newest developments of both Russian and foreign defense manufacturers.

The exhibition is held once every two years. In 2013, the Nizhny Tagil arms show was attended by delegations from more than 45 countries, about 400 leading international specialists and top managers of defense enterprises.

China Mulls Exporting J-10B Fighters with Russian Engines to Other Countries

Source : http://en.yibada.com

The Chinese government is considering plans to export its J-10B fighter equipped with the Russian-built AL31FN-S3 engine to Pakistan and other potential buyers from Asia, Africa and Latin America in the future, according to Kanwa Defense Review, a Canada-based Chinese-language military magazine.

According to the magazine, the mass production of the J-10B fighters was started by Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group last year. At least 10 aircraft have been turned over to the Chinese military and undergoing flights tests, while 14 of the jets have already been painted with PLA Air Force markings.

Kanwa said that the PLA Air Force will eventually form a fighter regiment by commissioning 24 J-10Bs before the end of the year.

The J-10B, which was designed as the upgraded version of the J-10 fighter, is the first domestically designed aircraft, which is equipped with a diverter-less supersonic inlet that can shield the engine compressor blades from radar waves.

According to the article, the aircraft's new electronic warfare systems can also be seen in front of the canards and atop the vertical stabilizer and it has an infrared search and track sensors to conduct reconnaissance operations.

Russia is set to release the first batch of the engines this year, as it has agreed to sell advanced AL31FN engines to China to improve the J-10B's power systems. The improvement will increase the life of the aircraft from the J-10A's 500 flight hours to the J-10B's 750 hours.

The report said that China is set to introduce more Russian engines in the future and all J-10B aircraft will be fitted with the AL31FN.

Zhang Zhaozhong, a military expert at the National Defense University (NDU), said in an interview with the China Central Television (CCTV) that the J-10B fighter is 30 percent better than the J-10A fighter in overall performance.

Zhang added that the J-10B has more advantages than the third-generation fighters of China's neighboring countries and the 3.5-generation fighters deployed in the Asia-Pacific region by the U.S.

PLA artillery troops begin two months of live-fire drills

Source : http://www.wantchinatimes.com

Artillery troops of the People's Liberation Army kicked off a live-fire drill at a training base in northwest China's Lanzhou Military Area Command on Monday.

The drill, which will last more than two months, will see artillery brigades from all seven PLA military area commands confront armored forces, infantry and air forces, according to a military statement.

While previous war games have mostly targeted a single combat mode, this drill will test a wide spectrum of combat abilities, including firepower support, assault and defense, retreat and pursuit, airborne and anti-airborne actions.

"The drill targets multiple issues that our artillery could encounter in a future war," said Tang Ning, a senior PLA official in charge of military training.

Tang noted that the drill will aim to rectify "bad habits" such as a tendency to attack from a single base, excessive fire at easy targets and commanders getting too close to targets.

The drill is also an opportunity to test and improve the abilities of drones and radar as well as sonar systems to lock on targets and assist artillery assaults, the official added.

Russia’s military base in Armenia alerted in snap combat readiness check

Source : http://tass.ru/en

MOSCOW, July 7. /TASS/. The Russian military base in Armenia was alerted on Tuesday in a sudden combat readiness check, the press office of Russia’s Southern Military District said on Tuesday.

"The commission of the Southern Military District headed by the District’s Deputy Commander, Lieutenant-General Igor Turchenyuk has started a sudden combat readiness check of the military base located in the Republic of Armenia," the press office said in a statement.

"During the sudden check, the commission will study the readiness of on-duty forces in the aviation unit in Erenbuni and the military base in the Gyumri garrison for the accomplishment of the tasks for switching to full combat readiness," the press release said.

Special attention will be paid to practical actions from an alarm call to the deployment of the base’s units in the designated areas for accomplishing combat training tasks in the Kamkhud and Alagyaz training ranges.

The military drills will be monitored with the help of the Navodchik-2 drones.

China wishes to buy RD-180 rocket engines from Russia

Source : http://www.interfax.ru/

China is interested in buying Russia's RD-180 dual-combustion chamber 400 tonne thrust engines for its prospective super-heavy-lift launch vehicle, a source familiar with the situation told Interfax-AVN on July 7.

"The question is at least about buying ready rocket engines, first and foremost, RD-180, or even acquiring a production license," the source said in comment on a statement by Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin who said on Monday that China might buy Russian rocket engines.

In his words, "the second option is undesirable to us."

"It's all about coordination of an intergovernmental agreement on the protection of technologies, and we have an obvious difference here: the Chinese want to use our engine at their own discretion and we cannot do that. Consistent with the missile technology control regime, we bear full responsibility for the use [of this technology] by a country not participating in this regime," he said.

At present, RD-180 engines designed and manufactured by NPO Energomash in the Moscow region are supplied to the United States.

"The Chinese have chosen the RD-180 engine for possible development of a universal rocket module on its basis, because an [engine] modification for Russia's Rus-M launch vehicle was supposed to deliver a payload to the orbit even in the case of failure of one engine in the first stage's propulsion package," he said.

As known, former heads of Roscosmos abandoned the project of a medium-class launch vehicle with increased lift capacity, Rus-M, in favor of Angara.

A draft federal space program for the period from 2016 till 2025 does not envisage the development of a super-heavy-lift launch vehicle in Russia. The program only stipulates an upgrade of the heavy-lift launch vehicle Angara-A5 to the Angara-A5B modification with 35 tonne lift capacity.

PLA sends HQ-9 air defense missiles close to Kashmir border

Source : http://www.wantchinatimes.com

In preparation for a potential territorial conflict with India, China has deployed HQ-9 air defense missiles to Hetian airfield in the south of the Xinjiang Uyghur autonomous region in the country's northwest, according to the Communist Party publication Global Times on July 3. Hetian is only 260 kilometers from India-administered Kashmir.

Kanwa Defense Review, a Chinese-language magazine based in Canada, said the radar vehicles of HQ-9 air defense missiles have recently been seen at the base and assessed that they are there to defend China's western border from a potential air strike launched by the Indian Air Force.

Hetian airfield is the staging base of the PLA Air Force's 37th Air Division, from where the unit's JH-7A fighter bombers can carry out airstrikes against targets in India. As such, it is likely to be a target for the Indian Air Force in the event of a war.

Kanwa also said the PLA Air Force made another decision in late June to send another air defense brigade from the Guangzhou Military Region to the Gobi desert.

US Air Force No Match for Russia’s Air Defense – Italian Media

Russian Air Defense Forces Fire Pantsir-S1 Missiles at Contest (VIDEO)

“In the event of war breaking out between Putin and Washington, the US weapons will prove unable to crush the Kremlin, much less to hit Moscow from a safe distance,” the newspaper wrote.

US generals fully subscribe to this assessment, Il Giornale noted, adding that 96 percent of the weapons obtained by the Pentagon over the past fifteen years have a maximum range of just 80 kilometers.

“In other words, our air power is only equipped to deal with third world countries like Iraq,” where the US Air Force encountered no resistance and did not have to either penetrate enemy air defenses or engage enemy aircraft,” the CSBA report said.

Russia and China are a different story. Both have advanced air defense systems in place, meaning that US planes won’t be able to get close to enemy targets.

“That means that any war with Russia would leave us without air superiority,” the US analysts warned.

Ever Wondered About the Military Balance in Central Asia?

Source : http://russia-insider.com

Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan have tiny militaries and rely on Russia for their defenseIsolationist

Turkmenistan is attempting to rearm its modestly-sized military

Kazakhstan has a credible and relatively capable armed force - but albeit the biggest in the region still counts under 50,000 men

Uzbekistan has the second most capable army after Kazakhstan - but one that is underfunded and takes a back seat to the security police

SIGNIFICANCE: Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan are leading other Central Asian governments in increased spending on military and security forces and the procurement of modern equipment. Regional governments have long-standing fears of potential Russian military interference and remain concerned about the situation in Afghanistan. The increase in military expenditures is expanding capabilities, although the degree and pace of improvement varies from country to country, and regional militaries still lag Russian and NATO forces.

ANALYSIS: Impacts

Russian forces presence in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan will increase.

Turkmenistan will place greater emphasis on modern weapons procurement and naval assets.

Mobile and counter-terrorism focused forces will be seen as more important than conventional land forces.

While Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan will drive military reform, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan will increasingly rely on Russia.

Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan’s military is Central Asia’s most capable, but it is far less capable than NATO or Russian militaries. Special forces will play a larger role as Kazakhstan looks to make a greater contribution to the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation’s counter-terrorism capability.

A Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) report estimates Kazakhstan’s armed forces at 30,000-45,000 troops — plus many thousands of other personnel attached to the Interior Ministry. In 2014, Astana said that it would be increasing defence spending by 36% over three years from around 2 billion dollars per annum to 2.7 billion dollars by 2017, according to a report by IHS Janes. However, this increase may have to be reduced slightly to fall in line with expected budget cuts due to low oil prices.

Astana is looking to trim all 2015-17 budgets to match a 50 dollars per barrel oil price, but President Nursultan Nazarbayev could authorise the government to support increased defence expenditure with oil reserves from the National Fund. The World Bank noted that in 2013 Kazakhstan spent the equivalent of 1.2% of GDP on defence.

Air force

The air force, which has a primarily air defence role, has between 11,000 and 13,000 personnel, according to SIPRI and the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS). Combat pilots average 100 hours of flight time per year, which is lower than the NATO standard. On February 4, Major General Nurlan Ormanbetov, Commander in Chief of the Kazakhstan Air Defence Forces (KADF), said that Astana plans to acquire the Russian Sukhoi Su-30SM ‘Flanker’ from Russia. As noted by IHS Janes, the KADF currently uses the MiG-27 ‘Flogger’, Su-25 ‘Frogfoot’, MiG-31 ‘Foxhound’, Su-27 ‘Flanker’, and MiG-29 ‘Fulcrum’ aircraft. The SU-30SM has been developed by Russia as a stopgap unitl the MiG-35 and Sukoi T-50 PAK-FA fifth generation fighters become fully operational.

The navy has been significantly expanded and modernised since 2010. It now has 3,000 personnel and has deployed new patrol boats and missile boats. By the end of 2015, it will have gained mine countermeasure (MCM) capabilities with the delivery of a Project 1750E inshore MCM vessel from Russia. The navy’s missions focus on territorial defence and protection of offshore oil platforms and tankers. Kazakhstan’s increased naval procurement follows a general trend of greater military activity on the Caspian. On February 16, as reported by IHS Janes, Kazakhstan and France are to work jointly on the development of unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs). Astana will buy 10 UUVs to use in the Caspian.

Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan’s military is reckoned to be Central Asia’s second most capable with an army currently numbering 40,000 personnel. Total defence spending is approximately 2 billion dollars per annum, according to SIPRI. The military is focused on improving its capabilities to defeat asymmetric challenges to President Islam Karimov’s administration. However, in Uzbekistan, the National Security Service (SNB) has historically been seen as significantly more important than the military. This trend will likely continue. The SNB will be a key powerbroker in any Karimov succession crisis. This highlights Tashkent’s main security priority, which is to maintain internal stability as opposed to undertake foreign operations.

Air force disrepair

Uzbekistan’s air force is reasonably well-equipped, but ill-maintained. Pilots receive around only 10 hours of flight time per year. Uzbekistan’s primary air assets are SU-24, SU-27, SU-25 and MIG-29 fighters, with transport capabilities provided by Illyshin-76 and AN-26s.

Joint Russian training

Uzbekistan’s defence priorities include procuring modern military equipment, improving combat readiness and mobility, and increasing professionalism among the officer corps. In December 2014, defence and military cooperation were discussed during President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Uzbekistan. Some 3,000 Uzbekistani military officers will reportedly study at military schools in Russia this year, which will increase Russia-Uzbekistan military interoperability.

Leaner fighting force

Uzbekistan aims to cut the overall size of its military in order to free up resources to create and train more mobile units. Heavy armour formations — using T-72, T-64 and T-62 battle tanks — and high-calibre artillery units are being reduced in favour of lighter infantry units with counter-insurgency/counter-terrorism and mountain warfare capabilities.

In January, the United States announced delivery to Uzbekistan of 328 Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) military vehicles to be used for counter-terrorism and counter-narcotics operations, according to Radio Free Europe/Free Liberty (RFE/RL). Washington stressed that this was non-lethal aid.

Turkmenistan

Ashgabat’s military numbers an estimated 22,000-30,000, according to SIPRI. Despite being willing to spend money on modern weapons, Turkmenistan’s armed forces are considered weak with low operational effectiveness. Ashgabat has been unwilling to allocate spending to training and equipment maintenance. Meanwhile, the modern weapons it has acquired largely remain unused due to a lack of qualified personnel. The 2012 defence budget is estimated to be 210 million dollars, according to SIPRI. The army currently uses a lot of old Soviet era hardware such as T-72 tanks, BTRs and BMP infantry fighting vehicles.

Air Force struggles

Despite having received a large number of aircraft at the collapse of the Soviet Union, Turkmenistan has struggled to maintain these, and pilot training has suffered. Currently it has MiG-29 and SU-25 fighters along with a handful of Mi-24s and Mi-8 helicopters. The air force lacks a heavy lift capability and would struggle to support the army on out-of-area operations or on Caspian patrols, which it is officially tasked to do.

Navy new ships

The navy was reformed as an independent force in only the past two years. Previously it was a department in the general staff. The navy’s missions include defending the Caspian coastline and protecting energy assets. Ashgabat has focused on improving naval capabilities through building new bases, procuring new ships and setting up a naval officer training academy.

As reported by Eurasianet in 2011, Turkmenistan bought two 12418 Molniya-class missile corvettes armed with the Uran-E missile system. These vessels are among some of the most powerful ships on the Caspian, although Ashgabat still trails Moscow and Tehran in naval capability. In 2013, Turkmenistan reportedly procured eight naval vessels which will be made at the Turkish shipyard Dearsan.

Military reform

President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov has made military reform a central aspect of his policy platform. In 2010, the government adopted a five-year military modernisation plan. However, reports indicate that the programme focuses on rearmament objectives, rather than structural reforms. In November, Berdymukhamedov reportedly told his national security council that Turkmenistan must procure the most advanced modern military equipment.

With the country having a long, porous border with Afghanistan, Ashgabat will increasingly look to procure unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for surveillance. However, despite buying modern arms, absent reforms and greater training of personnel, Turkmenistan’s military will remain an impressive military on paper but will lack the capabilities to defend the state.

Kyrgyzstan

In 2013, according to World Bank data, Kyrgyzstan allocated the equivalent of 3.2% of GDP to defence spending. This represents a gradual decline over the last four years from 2010 (3.8%) and 2011 (3.4%). The Kyrgyzstani armed forces are weak overall with gaps in command and control. Total spending on military and security services is estimated by SIPRI at 234 million dollars per annum.

Morale is assessed to be low. Declining funding means that Kyrgyzstan is increasingly dependent on external assistance for equipment and training. Bishkek’s main goal is to improve readiness and mobility in order to let the military respond to both border and internal events.

Army

The army’s total strength is 8,500 personnel, according to SIPRI. The army is looking to become a more agile force focused on mountain warfare. Mirroring a common theme across the region, the army is equipped with T-72 tanks, BMPs and BTR armoured vehicles.

Air force

Poor pilot and personnel training hinder Kyrgyzstan’s air force which is considered to be one of Central Asia’s weakest. Given limited resources, the country’s leadership has chosen not to upgrade the air force’s capabilities. Instead, Bishkek relies on assistance from Russian air forces based at Kant, where Moscow has rights until 2032 ( see CIS: Unstable Central Asia will drive Russian ties – January 23, 2015). In February, Russia announced intentions to reinforce the combat capabilities at Kant.

Tajikistan

With its 1,300 kilometre border with Afghanistan, Tajikistan’s military would be pressed to halt any incursions from militant groups. To boost security, Tajikistan is planning a new military base on the Afghan border.

Total spending on military and security services is estimated at 164 million dollars per annum, according to SIPRI. Dushanbe’s military forces developed out of irregulars that operated during the 1992-97 civil war. In recent years, the military has sought to increase mobility by establishing airborne and mountain infantry units. Tajikistan is dependent on Moscow for its security. Russia has 7,000 troops in Tajikistan that are set to remain in the country until 2042 ( see CIS: Unstable Central Asia will drive Russian ties – January 23, 2015).

Tajikistan’s army has only 7,000 personnel, and uses a variety of Soviet era equipment. Air forces are divided among various ministries, and have only a handful of Mi-24 and Mi-8 helicopters. With GDP of 8.5 billion dollars (World Bank 2013), Tajikistan’s military and security forces are likely to remain constrained for the foreseeable future. Dushanbe lacks the spending power to boost the military significantly.

CONCLUSION: Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan appear to be building reasonably capable military forces. In Uzbekistan, the security service (SNB) will likely remain pre-eminent and enjoy the best access to the president. Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan are struggling to maintain even small rapid reaction forces; Bishkek and Dushanbe would likely need Russian military support in the event of a security crisis. Turkmenistan has the wealth to formulate a major military force, but Ashgabat has been unwilling to spend on training and maintenance.

US new defense strategy names Russia, China, Iran and North Korea prime enemies

Source : http://english.pravda.ru

Pentagon has unveiled a new national defense strategy, according to which "revisionist-minded" states and extremist groups are seen as main threats to the security o the United States.

The document on behalf of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the US armed forces, General Martin Dempsey, was published on Wednesday. The paper states that the new national defense strategy was elaborated developed in connection with the need to counter revisionist-minded states that challenge international norms and extremist groups that use violence to undermine trans-regional security.

Russia, according to the authors of the document, made constructive contributions to specific security areas, such as the struggle against drugs and terrorism, but has repeatedly demonstrated disrespect for the sovereignty of its neighbors. According to the Pentagon, Russia is ready to use force to achieve its goals.

Pentagon officials believe that the Russian army undermines regional security both directly and by means of third forces. Such steps violate numerous agreements that Russia has signed to act in accordance with international standards, including the UN Charter, the Helsinki Accords, the NATO-Russia Founding Act, the Budapest Memorandum and the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, the US Defense Department believes.

As for other enemies, the US believe that Iran poses strategic challenges to the international community, while the DPRK (North Korea) directly threatens its neighbors, especially South Korea and Japan. To crown it all, the Pentagon believes that China's actions fuel tensions in the Asia-Pacific region. At the same time, none of the above-mentioned countries, that is, Russia, Iran, North Korea and China, do not seek direct military conflict with the United States or its allies, the US defense strategy says

Brazil puts off purchase of Russian Pantsyr-S SAM until 2016 - Brazilian ambassador to Russia

MOSCOW. July 5 (Interfax) - Brazil has put off the signing of a contract for the acquisition of Pantsyr-S surface-to-air missile and anti-aircraft artillery systems due to the shortage of budget resources but plans to conclude the deal at the beginning of 2016, Brazilian ambassador to Russia Antonio Jose Vallim Guerreiro has said in an interview with Interfax.

"According to my knowledge, the acquisition of Russian Pantsyr-S air defense systems is planned for the first half of 2016," he said.

He accounted the delay to the fact that "this year's federal budget does not contain sufficient allocations for paying for the said weapons."

"In any case the general decision on the purchase has been made and a corresponding deal will be concluded," the diplomat added.

Commander: IRGC's Ghadir Radar System Enjoys Cutting Edge Technology

Source : http://english.farsnews.com

Discovering and tracking micro aerial vehicles (MAV) … is one of the special qualities of Ghadir radar system which enjoys the world cutting edge technology," Brigadier General Esmayeeli said, addressing the unveiling ceremony at IRGC's Air Defense Site in the city of Ahwaz in the bordering province of Khuzestan in Southwestern Iran on Saturday.

He noted that Ghadir radar system has been fully designed and manufactured by experts of the Self-Sufficiency Jihad Department of the IRGC Aerospace Force at a cost one fifth of its foreign rivals.

Brigadier General Esmayeeli pointed to the high capability of the IRGC's radar system in electronic warfare, and said, "Ghadir radar system uses wave types the tracking of which would be very difficult for the enemy."

He noted that another quality of the radar system is that it can easily track all targets in different ranges by calculating range and angle of the flying objects.

Brigadier General Esmayeeli reiterated that air defense systems play an important role by providing security and tranquility for the civilian population, and said, "It is for the same capabilities of the Islamic Republic of Iran that the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) lays emphasis on the safety of Iranian sky."

The IRGC deployed its Ghadir phased-array radar system in Ahwaz today.

The Ghadir radar system is capable of discovering and tracking planes from a 600-kilometer and Ballistic missiles from a 1,100-kilometer distance and an altitude of 100 kilometers.

Brigadier General Esmayeeli and a number of other Iranian Armed Forces commanders were present in the unveiling ceremony at IRGC's Air Defense Site in Ahwaz.

The Ghadir radar system was unveiled for the first time in Garmsar radar site in Semnan province, Northern Iran last year.

The radar system is equipped with over 100 antennas which are capable of 360 degrees rotation.

The phased-array Ghadir radar system can be used in all types of electronic warfare and in all climatic conditions.

In May 2012, IRGC Aerospace Commander Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh said Iran is mass-producing Ghadir Radar systems in great numbers, adding that the radar system covers areas over 1,000km in distance.

"This radar system can cover areas around 1,100 km in range and its designing and production project ended early last (Iranian) year and is now being mass-produced," Hajizadeh told FNA at the time.

In June 2011, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps put into operation the new home-made long-range Ghadir radar system that enables its forces to monitor low-altitude satellites.

The Ghadir radar system which covers areas (maximum) 1,100km in distance and 300km in altitude has been designed and built to identify aerial targets, radar-evading aircrafts, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles as well as low-altitude satellites.

US-Russia Economic War Is Heating Up Russia’s energy giant

Source : http://russia-insider.com

As the US and Europe push forward with continued sanctions against Russia, an intriguing economic battle is taking shape, one which will have significant repercussions for years to come. While Washington and Brussels seek to divide Russia from Europe in order to maintain Western hegemony – blocking Eurasian integration by definition – Moscow is counteracting this strategy by leveraging its economic power in the form of energy exports and cooperation.

Although most of the economic machinations have flown under the radar, being less headline-grabbing than the conflict over Ukraine, extended sanctions, or the NATO military buildup, in reality they are equally important. Russia’s energy giant Gazprom has entered into economically and strategically critical deals with key western companies at precisely the same moment that the West seeks to isolate Russia economically. Simultaneously, Russian-sponsored gas pipelines in the North and South of Europe (as well as in Central and East Asia) complicate matters for those who would seek to alienate Russia from the European market and the potential political and economic power that access to that market brings.

From a geopolitical and strategic perspective, Russia’s ongoing conflict with the US and its European subordinates is being manifested as much in the boardrooms as in the halls of parliaments; as much under the Baltic and Black Seas, as in the war rooms of the Pentagon and Kremlin.

It’s the Economics, Stupid

Amid the panels and discussions about the development of BRICS, Eurasian integration, and New Silk Roads at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, a massive energy cooperation deal was signed, one that should be seen as a major coup for Moscow. An agreement between the world’s top gas producer, Russia’s Gazprom, and Royal Dutch Shell, to build two new Nord Stream gas pipelines to Germany will have major implications for the future of economic cooperation between Russia and European energy firms. Moreover, it will further cement Russia as an integral partner for German industry, the heart of the Germany’s economy.

The details of the agreement are not yet entirely clear, but the basics are known, and clearly significant. Not only will Royal Dutch Shell and its junior partners – Germany’s E.ON and Austria’s OMV – now be part of a consortium constructing additional capacity for the Nord Stream, the cooperation will extend to asset swaps and partnerships in a variety of other projects both in Europe and beyond. As Alexei Miller, CEO of Gazprom explained:

Documents of such significance are signed only once every five years or maybe even 10… Many of our traditional partners are positioning themselves as strong regional players… Shell is a global player. And as the global gas markets develop… we will be creating a global strategic partnership… We know about Brazil, Australia and about the Asian market. And that allows us to talk about a global partnership… Our level of readiness is very high.

It is clear that, purely from an economic perspective, such partnership between Gazprom and Shell and its partners will have global implications. It will allow for expansion of the joint Gazprom-Shell liquefied natural gas (LNG) offshore project Sakhalin-2, which only reached its full capacity in 2014.

Such an expansion will make the already successful project even more of a player in providing much needed energy to the growing economies of the Asia-Pacific region, as well as its customers in North America.

Considering the high costs of transport for LNG, the strategic location of the project, as well as the recently agreed expansion of the joint Gazprom-Shell operation, Sakhalin-2 is poised to make Russia a critical supplier for the region’s LNG needs in the years to come.

The agreement will also provide for major upstream asset swaps, an industry term for cooperation in exploration, feasibility studies, preliminary drilling and testing, and other early stage processes. Essentially, this would make Gazprom and Shell into interconnected partners in a number of key respects, not simply in terms of energy production and export.

The importance of this point should not be understated because, unlike simple supply contracts which can be renegotiated, allowed to expire, or terminated, this sort of cooperation is a longer-term process, and with the massive amounts of capital investment into upstream assets, would make any significant changes due to political circumstances far less likely. In short, Russia would have a more concretely guaranteed partner; insurance against negative political developments.

Of course, the deal with Shell is not the only major economic development in terms of energy in recent months. The much publicized Russia-China gas deal announced a year ago is beginning to bear fruit beyond the obvious propaganda coup that it was.

Gazprom Deputy Chairman Alexander Medvedev recently announced that China will begin construction of its leg of the Power of Siberia gas pipeline on June 29, 2015. With Russia already having started construction of the pipeline on its territory back in September 2014, the project looks to be on target for the on-stream date of late 2017.

The significance of this development should not be understated as a cursory look at the pipeline map of Gazprom’s eastern projects demonstrates clearly that the Power of Siberia project, along with the other pipelines already in place, will position Russia to be a major provider of energy both to China via the soon-to-be constructed gas processing and gas chemical facilities at Blagoveshchensk on the Russia-China border, and to other East Asian countries.

In addition to these important eastern energy developments, the imminent construction and incorporation of the Altai Pipeline could make Russia-China energy cooperation into a full-blown energy alliance. Projected to supply 30-38 billion cubic meters of Russian gas from Western Siberia to China, the pipeline would cement Russia as China’s premier economic partner in terms of energy.

Not only is it the sheer volume of gas that Russia would supply, but the location, running south directly into Urumqi, the capital of China’s Xinjiang province, and the hub of many of China’s New Silk Road plans.

In this way, Russian energy will become a principal driver of Chinese economic development and expansion. More broadly, it makes Russian gas and Chinese production the twin driving forces of Eurasian integration.

Naturally the political importance of such interdependence is somewhat self-evident, as economic partnerships quite often translate into political and strategic ones. And it is in the realm of politics where these economic arrangements are especially vital for Russia.

The Political and Strategic Dimension

Russia’s strategic imperative with regard to Europe is clear: do whatever it takes to prevent the US from effectively driving a wedge between Russia and Europe. As Washington has shown in the last 18 months, it will stop at nothing to sever any cooperation that it can between Moscow and its European partners.

From fomenting war in Ukraine, to pushing for sanctions and escalating its NATO forces, the US is clearly doing everything it can to draw a clear dividing line in Eastern Europe in an attempt to create a de facto “iron curtain” separating Russia from both political and economic partnerships in Europe.

Seen from this perspective, the deal with Shell is a clear countermove. Rather than simply being content with counter-sanctions, Moscow is attempting to drive its own wedge into Europe by becoming an important partner with Royal Dutch Shell, one of the most powerful and influential European corporations.

While the US is creating a geographical wedge, Russia is obviously creating an economic one; the deal will divide European political leaders beholden to US diktats from European business leaders beholden to profits and investors. Because of the profitability of trade with Russia, it will become far more politically unfeasible for the European establishment to go along with moves against Russia as it will further put them in conflict with their own business elites.

At the same time, Russia is undergoing its own pivot to Asia, expanding dramatically its economic relations with China in a number of areas, including military/defense technology transfer, as evidenced by the news that Russia will be selling its much prized S-400 missile systems to China, making it the first country to receive the technology. So, Russia and China simultaneously become energy and military partners. Though they may not use the term “alliance,” that is precisely what this is.

In this way, the economic war begun by the US and its toadies has now created the ultimate blowback, a full on economic blitzkrieg by Russia. Of course, it didn’t have to be this way as Russia was clearly happy to rake in the profits of continued cooperation with Europe pre-Ukraine crisis.

But, now that push has come to shove, the Russians have shown that they are simply unwilling to be on the receiving end of an economic war. Rather, they are now unveiling their big guns, the sort of arsenal for which US-NATO has little defense.
